The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a reform initiative by the Indian government to improve the education system. It aims to make education more inclusive, equitable, and relevant to the 21st century. The NEP 2020 replaced the 1986 National Policy on Education (NPE).

Differences from the old policy

  • Curriculum-The NEP 2020 replaced the 10+2 structure with a 5+3+3+4 structure. The new structure focuses on early childhood care and education, and includes vocational education from the 6th grade.
  • Teaching methods-The NEP 2020 emphasizes interactive and student-centered learning. It also aims to reduce the amount of curricular content to focus on essential learning and critical thinking.
  • Language-The NEP 2020 emphasizes the use of the mother tongue or regional language as a medium of instruction.
  • Exams-The NEP 2020 aims to make exams easier by testing core competencies, and allowing students to take board exams twice a year.
  • Higher education-The NEP 2020 promotes multidisciplinary education, institutional autonomy, and the internationalization of higher education.
